Editorial Standards
How we source information, how we check it, and how we keep it up to date.
We prefer primary, authoritative sources
Where the information affects a decision — for example, tax bands, first-time-buyer relief thresholds or scheme rules — we work from the original source published by the relevant government body or regulator, rather than second-hand summaries.
- GOV.UK — Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT), mortgage schemes, Lifetime ISA rules and general home-buying content.
- HMRC — SDLT technical guidance and refund rules.
- Revenue Scotland — Land and Buildings Transaction Tax (LBTT), Additional Dwelling Supplement.
- Welsh Revenue Authority / Welsh Government — Land Transaction Tax (LTT).
- The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) — survey levels and standards.
- Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) — regulator guidance.
Review dates and updates
Substantive guides and the calculators carry a 'Last reviewed' date near the top. Where a Budget, statutory instrument or regulatory update changes the numbers, we update the calculators (single source of truth in the codebase) and refresh guide content. We aim to review each page at least once a year.
Corrections
If you spot something you think is out of date or wrong, please email info@mortgagepath.uk. We take corrections seriously and will fix genuine errors promptly; where an error may have materially misled a reader, we'll add a short note describing the correction and its date on the affected page.
Educational, not advisory
MortgagePath explains rather than recommends. We do not tell an individual reader which mortgage, lender, survey level, conveyancer or scheme is suitable for them — that judgement depends on your circumstances and, where relevant, should come from a regulated adviser. Our aim is to help you arrive at any professional conversation already understanding the terms and the trade-offs.
Important. MortgagePath provides general educational information only. It is not mortgage advice, financial advice, a mortgage broker, lender or comparison service. We do not recommend specific lenders, products or rates. If you choose to follow our optional link to a regulated mortgage broker, you'll deal directly with the broker — MortgagePath doesn't transfer your details.
